I. Personnel
Middle class Americans work in the school. There is very little diversity in ethnic backgrounds. Most teachers live in and around the school district. Most enjoy their jobs and look forward to the challenges of teaching. All positions are valued at the school. Staff members see where they fit into the plan and goals of the district. Staff members are able to relate to one another since they are from common backgrounds.
V. Building and Facilities Usage
The building is of newer construction. It has a modern look and has the capability of up dating the school’s technology. The building is maintained by the custodians and the maintenance department, but all staff and students do their part to keep the building clean. The layout of the school is simple. It is two stories tall and built in a square shape. Classrooms are on the outside walls and a courtyard is in the middle of the school’s structure. The school has a large gymnasium and auditorium for athletics and performing arts. These two areas are where the majority of large groups come together. Everyone in the school feels safe because all have taken some level of ownership in the school. All have a sense of belonging making the school an entire family.
VII. Finances and Resources
The majority of revenue comes from property taxes. The school’s superintendent, treasurer, and school board are in charge of taking care of all school accounts. The allocation of funds is decided through budgets. Every department has there best idea for funds needed and budgets are designed from this information. There are other resources available through school club fundraisers, various boosters, and parent/teacher associations. Club advisors are selected through an interview process and are in charge of the club’s funds and turning in all receipts to the school treasurer.
VIII. Parents and Community Relations
Parents play a supportive role in the education of their children. They work with staff and administration to see that their children get a quality education. Out of the building parents are connected to their children’s daily lives influencing what they do. In the building you see many of the parents at athletic events, concerts, and other school activities. The school has relationships with law enforcement officers, judges, the town newspaper, and small business owners in the community. These people are seen throughout the school on banners advertising their business or message.
IX. My Realities
I feel that there is a separation between teachers and administrators impeding the ideal characteristics mentioned in the reading. To overcome this obstacle teachers and administrators need to continue to improve working relationships. Hopefully this will help to improve the separation between staff and administration. I have learned a lot from this activity. I didn’t even know what a blog was or how to set one up. This could be something I could use for some of my upper level science classes for a group discussion.
